A Strong Start
The Women Presidents’ Organization (WPO), will commemorate 10
successful years with a November 7 fête at the St. Regis in midtown
Manhattan. Members—all women business owners whose companies
gross over $1 million per year if they are service based, and more than
$2 million if they are product based—can toast their accomplishments,
as well as tap into the resource that is the most vital to their success:
one another.
Women with an ownership interest in their business who wish to
join the WPO can complete an application that must then be approved
by headquarters, accompanied by documentation of their company’s
earnings. The group, founded in 1997 by Dr. Marsha Firestone, was
designed to offer an “opportunity for top women business owners
whose businesses are at the same level to meet and together drive
business breakthroughs.” Today it boasts some of the world’s most
powerful women among its ranks of 11,000 members within 71
chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Why Row It Alone?
Nothing’s more powerful than a woman with the right information—other than
a network of women, of course. The Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW)
Network is a professional association dedicated to the success of women
in commercial real estate, and in June they released a report titled Minding the
Gap, which outlines successful strategies for both individuals and companies in
commercial real estate to ensure a more diverse workplace with women in more
predominant leadership roles.
Richard Ellis, who has served as a lead underwriter for CREW Network’s
industry research program since its inception in 2005, is the premier
underwriter of this CREW Network report which comprises the results of an
eight-week study of 18 diverse, yet representative, network chapters.
The report indicates that one of the most significant barriers to
women advancing in commercial real estate is the fact that both men and
women prefer to manage groups of their own gender. Other barriers include a
lack of awareness about compensation disparities, a hesitance to accept risk as
part of the overall career equation and challenges in setting a work/life balance.
Some tips from Minding the Gap:
> Use a salary increase or potential promotion as an opportunity to negotiate.
> Develop a unique specialization or niche expertise that will add value to your
company.
